I got my certification in August since then I have yet to get on with a service. Thus I have yet to use all of my EMT skills and am nervous I will do something wrong. How do I overcome this slight nervous feeling?

I've been in EMS for 3 years, a medic for 2. I still get nervous. Nothing wrong with being nervous as long as you don't let it control you.

You have people's lives and health in your hands, you can easily kill someone, a little nervousness keeps you grounded and double checking what you do.

I have a feeling that as I get more experience that feeling will fade. I had to do a 12 hour ride along for my EMT class and loved it. I know I am in the rite field. I feel that I just need lots of experience, which will come with time.

I've been a paramedic for a 2 years, basic for 1, and I still double check myself. I know people who have been paramedics for 20+ years who still get nervous and double check themselves, its a good thing. That nervousness keeps you from making stupid mistakes, it is a good thing all in all.

It might never truly go away. As long as you can learn to control it, though, you'll do well :)

Truth be told, you WILL do something wrong. We've all been there, and we'll all be there again. When you do mess up, learn from it. Don't beat yourself up.

Best of luck!

I totally understand where you're coming from and as the others say you will be nervous for a while and you will make a mistake. I was a year and a half out of emt-b school before I landed a decent job and was nervous too. Still am but once you get a job it'll all slowly start coming back and what doesn't you'll be able to absorb quicker than the first time and put it into practice. Just remember your ABC's and the rest will fall into place. Just keep learning. I am. Even if its over your head stick your face in a book a little bit every day and you'll be surprised at what you can pick up. ;) Good luck

i guess it's ok to be nervous but won't pt's pick it up? if you show it a lot that is..

my position is the same, i'm just starting in ems...

Ive been looking for a job for a while now. I finished my EMT basic class December 2010!!!

Still looking, I go back and read my book from time to time.

I'm still a noob but have always been pretty confident. Working for a private IFT company we get very routine/mundane calls/transports. Sometimes our frequent fliers are a little more unstable than usual.

The only thing that makes me nervous is trying to remember where all of the hospitals are and just how to get there. It sucks cruising down the freeway, trying to monitor traffic and thinking about which exit you might have to take.

I think the nervousness comes from the fact that as a lowly basic I can't really do jack to help stabilize a patient. All I can do is spray oxygen at him/her. Great.

Other than that, the only thing that might cause any nervousness is lifting heavy patients. Don't want to drop them, don't want to hurt yourself.
