Hello folks! I ran into something very interesting this weekend. It is called the Neur-walk virus. I'm not sure of the correct spelling but it is a progressive stomach virus causeing diareah, vomiting and rapid weight loss. It is said to be highly contagious. Does anyone know anything about this? How is it spread... etc. This patient had it for 3 days when we picked him up and he had no radial pulses, no b/p. Dry as a bone.

Are you talking about the norovirus? We had an outbreak at an NH a few years ago which created an MCI with 15+ being transferred and one called on scene.

It wasn't pretty.

It is like all other viruses.. spread by the 4 F's. Food, feces, fomites, fingers .
In other words any spread of bodily fluids (sneezes, non-washed hands, bodily fluids).

One should be sure to perform good hand washing techniques, ( in which part I fail to see most medics perform).

Be sure to decontimate steering wheels, radio microphones and knobs, as well many other "usual" touched items.

Is the Norwalk virus. Nasty little thing. Had it about 2 months ago and ended up in the ER with severe abdominal pains. Would've rather had 3 swift kicks to the scrotum area. For my troubles I recieved Fentanyl IV. Was probably a little drastic but what do I care. I felt gooooood after that.

It is the Norovirus. That is what they reported when I picked the patient up. The hospital said it would have had to be the Nor-walk virus... but the nurse at the nursing home said that the whole unit had tested positive for the norovirus. So when I posted this, I was unsure of the correct word for this. So how is it spread? Is it airborn?

Anomalous posted a link to the CDC's website just above my last post. It has a thorough explanation of it and how it is transmitted. It's also just good place to browse for a while. Very interesting. If I could only get my desktop to the bathroom for some good ol' bathroom reading now.

I posted earlier on the modes of transmission as well you should had been taught modes of transmission of viral agents in the EMT course.

It is the common viral gastroenteritis.. commonly known as the "G.I. Bug".
