I am a new EMTB with no transport experience and very little other experience (from a rural area). I recently hired on with AMR (in a large city) and have done field training with two different FTOs. Both were/are hyper critical and give me poor eval scores on things that aren't my fault (ex:incorrect navigation to a call by an experienced medic). During field training I've seen the experienced medics make several mistakes and yet if I so much as take a few extra seconds to collect something from the med box it's noted as incompetence on my eval. When I hired on, they knew I was a non experienced EMT from a rural area an hour away (now having to learn hundred of square miles of big city streets, and equipment set up, etc). Any tips on how to keep my job and get cleared out of training from a hyper critical FTO?

Talk with your FTO and find out what specifically you need to do to pass. If you try talking with them and show that you want to improve it may help.

Get used to it, your going to be dealing with a lot of big headed individuals in EMS.

Ask yourself honestly if there things you can improve upon it. It is rare for FTOs to rag on you for no reason, and often times when a new person gives themselves too much credit, it encourages the FTO to nitpick more.

Talk to your FTOs and make sure expectations are clear. If you think you will struggle to meet them, voice that ahead of time. Be open to critique.
