So I got a text from a co-worker today asking me to cover his shift. Ok no problem I can do that. But then he went on to asking me for help and that he realizes he has a drinking problem and he has been drinking all day. He then proceeded to ask me not to tell anyone because he was afraid of being fired. He has been with the company for years and I have only been on for about 9 months. I don't want to be the one known as untrustworthy for telling someone but I can't help but feel as though I should be letting someone know. Can anyone give me some insight as to what I should do with this little predicament I am in.

thank you in advance

You agreed to cover his shift. He was at least responsible enough to call for coverage.

He knows he has a problem. What more do you want to do?

I'm trying to figure out how the civilian work force operates after 15 years in the military. In the service you are required to report this kind of incident involving alcohol.

Does your company have an Employee Assistance Program? Its generally an outside service with confidential support for things like this. Worth asking your HR department...

1. Is it just alcohol, or is there a bigger issue/trigger?

2. 12 step programs...
