Hello,
I am a Newley graduated Emt-b. I live in Missouri, I have been a CNA for the last 3 yrs, an I am currently a Tech in our local hospital for the last 2yrs. I am crossed trained in Labor & Delivery/Nursery. I am finding it SO HARD to find a job since I have no experience in EMS. I have sent my resume, letter of recomendation from previous employers, an my app. into every local ambulance district I can think of. I graduated at the end of July an I am still searching. I am doing ride alongs (voluntering so to speak) with a paramedic friend of mine at the ambulance district that I would love to be hired onto. Is there something else I could possibly do to help my chances of getting a job!!! I get so sick to my stomach stressing over finding a job; not because I need one, but because I have so much of a passion in working in this field. I am just so ANXIOUS to start working in this field. I work in the hospital setting, which I like, but I am the first one to jump up an down and get excited when Sh** hits the fan. I just thrive for it. I am desperate!!! Anyone?????

I suspect you'll get several answers of "become a paramedic". So, I'll say it first. :) This is usually followed by a thread on how nobody should expect to get a job with a mere 120-or-so hours of training.

I would try the larger local ambulance companies, especially those that do a lot of inter-facility transports. They usually have high turnover (a bad thing), but that means they're usually looking for staff fairly constantly (for you, a good thing.).

Ya i know. I have been a lucker for awhile, so I have picked up on that. And have already explanned myself on my decisions on previous post. Which I am going to go to the next avaiable paramedic program. But until I get there I am one who believes you should work in the field first.... Such as Cna, then Nurse! Thats my beliefs, everyones is different an I respect that! Just would love feedback on my question. As again, I am very excited!!

Oh an which is why I am doing ride alongs for the experience, because I do believe I need more "REAL LIFE" experience.

I dont know how things are there but up here the BLS ambulance companies are always hiring and will pretty much hire anyone who is NREMT certified.

Ambulance companies are aways looking for paramedics, but my feelings are to be a good medic, you need to be a good EMT. In my experience, I find the greatest medics I have seen have been an active EMT for at least 1 year.

As for the job, I am not sure if AMR is around were you are, but they are always looking for people. If not, does the hospital that you work for have an EMS system? Go to a regular med surg floor and ask what companies that they use for discharges. Then talk to them about a job. I would try for an IFT job at first. If you really want 911, try volunteering.

why don't you reserch and find out where to market for emt-b's are and then move there?

Well I can't just move where ever the market takes me! I have children, family, a home, etc.... And defiently couldn't move to Canadia (would be nice though)!!! Thanks everyone for all the wonderful ADVICE.....:deadhorse:

Find a job doing IFT while you think about paramedic school. I to was working int he hospital, and when I decided... NO WAY I AM GOING TO BE A NURSE... I went to basic class and took a job with IFT, which I found out I love even though I thought I was going to hate it, it has been great experience, where else do you get to do 6 assessments a day. I am finishing my pre-reqs for paramedic school right now (A&P, English, math, chem, etc). Either way it goes... it beats being a CNA in every way... except the pay and enviroment. It is still the best job I have ever had.

Hi,

I do not know anything about the market for EMTs in your area, however if it is anything like mine it is absolutely saturated with hundreds of EMTs finishing class every year with very probably 5 or so 911 spots that open a year.

Like what has been said, you may need to become a paramedic to up your chances of getting a job. Good luck.
