So I just got hired in CA..and on the way to the first day of orientation...I got into a minor parking lot collision. I was trying to swing into an open spot and I underestimated how close the other car was. I basically made a small dent in the side.

If I go through my insurance to pay for the damage, will this hurt my driving record? It is completely clean right now, and as far the company knows, I have never had any points on my record.

I just don't know if a mild parking collision like that constitutes a point on my record and whether it will jeopardize my employment....

Any help is appreciated...I'm really upset right now, this is the first 'accident' I have ever been in :(

Were you issued a citation by the police? If you did then yes that will go on your driving record.

The police aren't involved, we just exchanged info.

I think there has to be >$500 damage and/or injury for it to show up on your record. in any case, most jobs' insurance will allow 1 point or 1 accident in x-years

my last company was 2 points (accidents and/or collisions) in 3 years. so I wouldn't worry too much. when it all gets settled and you know the outcome just let them know.

Not sure on the driving record check as long as police weren't involved but you can definitely count on your insurance rates going up significantly if it was reported to them, had a small fender bender like yours a couple years back and my insurance went from 80 a month to $107.

If you are going through insurance, they have a mandatory reporting requirement over a certain dollar amount ($500?). So YES, it will appear on your record. If you pay out of pocket then it can be avoided, but you are leaving yourself open to being exploited by the other party.

Very rarely is it ever "just a small dent". The other driver is going to want it done right.

Check your maximum allowances in the Operations Manual regarding points/accidents.
