Hey everyone,
New here. 35 yrs old, just beginning my emergency medical degree. A lot of places outside of Chicago are hiring, but 34 and under. I will get my degree in 2 years, will I have any hope of getting a paramedic job? So frustrating.

I start my EMT course this week, so I'm excited to join this forum and get feed back from everyone! I'm also nervous it's such a male driven career, but I'm hoping I will be welcomed with open arms:)

It just depends on your area. I know a lot of fire department have age requirements, but I haven't heard of private services having them.

We have people at our company that are in their 60's. You will do just fine.

If its your dream, then go for it!! Hell, I'm 39 and just starting out. I knew getting into this, that my age may be an issue, but all you can do it give it your all and let your knowlage and actions speak louder than your age.

I had not considered age a part of the equation in attractiveness as a candidate. I'm 32 and just starting out. As far as I know unjustified age limits are discriminatory ...

The fire departments here in central Indiana all have an age 35 cut-off. However, there are plenty of other EMS-only agencies to work for that do not have a max age limit.

I'm 38, just finished FTO with the large urban 911 response agency for Indy. My age was a HUGE asset to me in getting hired. I just got my EMT cert last spring semester, and I was the only one in my academy recruit class with no prior experience. If I was younger, I really do not think I would not have been hired with no experience.

Thanks guys. I think private companies are the route I will have to take. Good luck to everyone! I'm beyond excited to start this:)

I currently work with a man who after retiring from the coast guard with 25+ years of experience he wanted to become an EMT. His 25 years of experience was business related with absolutely no EMS background. At 68 he got his EMT certification and is currently one of our top responding EMTs. He is in good shape and needed something to do. His wife is deceased and kids away in college. Good choice and he has no issues.
