My story is that I am 6 months out from finishing my paramedic A.A.S. and NREMT-P, and I am open to moving somewhere new for awhile, even if its just for a year or two. I have a great friend from high school that lives outside of Detroit and am looking into the option of moving out there so we can play catch up. It looks like I can get my Michigan paramedic cert by reciprocity, but I'm curious as to how hard it will be for me to get a job? I'll obviously be a new medic, but I'll have close to 4 years EMS experience when the time comes.

I've searched and read some of the other threads on the forum about Michigan, but they're kind of ambiguous concerning geography and differentiating between EMT-B and EMT-P job prospects.

I am particularly interested in the Royal Oak/Oakland County area, if anyone can offer some wisdom to an out-of-stater.

If you're going to Oakland County / Royal Oak I'd check out Alliance Mobile Health, Star EMS, Community EMS, and Superior Ambulance. For purely IFT experience there is also Concord EMS, Beaumont Medical Transportation, Medic One, etc.

I think it will be very challenging finding employment as an EMT-Basic, but there are always openings for Paramedics. I suggest calling or emailing the places and see what they say.

Also, please let us know what you find out. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I will definitely look into those services specifically when the time comes. Looking at the Michigan EMS web site, it appears the reciprocity process should be relatively painless, so I'll probably start making phone calls once summer time rolls around and I finish medic school.

Any other comments/suggestions in the mean time are more than welcomed.
