MRC (not to be confused with "MERC")

My contact with them was in 2006, they form units along predesignated lines and are deployable to disaster scenes and areas of medical need. Once called out, if you accept, you are a govenment employee with benefits and workman's comp etc. until released. Maybe analogous to seasonal hotshot fire crews?
If you decline...probably need to find a darn good excuse.

There are many other things to learn about them, like chain of command (who calls them out) and what they need/what you need to meet their needs.

I don't think it is a reliable source of income, but as time slips by since Sept 11 2001 more and more vacancies will appear.

I am in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and there is a medical arm of the AUX that supports the Coast Guard's medical services. You can find more information here: http://www.healthandsafety.auxnaco.org/. I am not an EMT-B yet, but plan to look into this more when I get certified.

The MRCs are volunteer groups. I'm in the Fremont (Cali) MRC, and we do a number of things, including free immunization clinics. We were part of the mass immunization clinics for the H1N1 virus, for example. We are also looking into public health outreach efforts, like health screening at the local high schools.

Are you trying to sign up to join the Auxiliary, or are you trying to get into the CG medical service? You have to join the CG Auxiliary first.

just trying to get into the CG Aux lol..and the go from there

Unfortunately, that's pretty typical--lol. If you don't hear from that guy then see if there are any other flotillas in your area and try to contact them. Or find out when their next meeting is and just show up and introduce yourself.

To join, you'll have to go through a basic background and fingerprint check. If you end up augmenting the Coast Guard in certain areas where you'd need a more extensive background check, they will ask you to do that.

I don't know how active the CG is in your area, but I live near NYC so there are opportunities to do all sorts of things. It really comes down to how much time you have and what is available. I've given tours of ships during Fleet Week the past 2 years. We have some members who are nurses and EMTs who help out the CG with medical supplies. Some people help cook on the ships. Some stand radio watches. The list is endless. And since we are volunteers, there are no medical standards you have to meet, no one is forced to do anything. A lot of CG AUX members are really into boating and will patrol local waterways. I personally do not do that because it doesn't interest me--I'd rather work directly with the CG. If you are interested in boating, the AUX will teach you how to become a very capable sailor. You can read more about it on the national site www.cgaux.org. I've been a member since 2001 and really enjoy it. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Here's it CAP or nothing. No puddle pirate auxillary around here because we don't have enough water to justify them.

I always wanted to be in the Navy or CG too, but couldn't because of a bad shoulder that DQ'd me. So the CG Aux is a good alternative. As USAFmedic45 said, there is also CAP. They are probably more active in landlocked areas so you might want to look into that if the CG Aux doesn't work out.

Actually CAP is involved in a larger percentage of search and rescue missions than the USCGA, even in coastal areas.

Yes, you do. All states have CAP wings and most have numerous squadrons (for example, the Indianapolis area alone has four or five senior squadrons and several cadet squadrons). The Nevada Wing and the Las Vegas squadrons are actually fairly busy. Good folks all around and I know several of them quite well.
