Hi all,


I will be interviewing for a very competitive department for an EMT position next week and I am trying to get comfortable with some of the interview questions. There are currently 105 applicants for 5 EMT-B spots, thankfully I already work for this County for a different department so I hope it will bump me a little bit since I can transfer into the EMS dept. And will also finish Medic school next month, with that being said, the question What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses will be on there for a fact. A friend who tested for them had it and all of the people that interviewed aswell, and it is the question that troubles me most, so I was honest and came up with this answer:

My greatest strengths would definitely have to be that I have a very strong work ethic; I am very persistent and very passionate about providing care to those in need. I have also been told that I bring a positive and professional atmosphere to the work place. With that being said, I believe that if I am given the opportunity for this position, I would not only bring a positive and professional atmosphere to the current ems staff, but also to our patients, and I believe that will allow us to provide our patients with a higher level of pre-hospital medical care. My greatest weakness would have to be that I am a very shy and quiet person, don’t get me wrong however, I am a very easy person to get along with and can effectively communicate with my coworkers and patients.


Please let me know what I can improve on or what doesnt need to be there, ect. Thank you! effing nervous
 
Your greatest weakness is actually that you are finishing your medic soon. That either means A. you will leave this employer soon for a medic position, or B. You will remain on as a EMT and potentially work out of your scope of employment as they are not hiring you as a paramedic.

I do agree you have a much better chance at employment as you can lateral over depending on your contract. But if i was the employer i have to be honest those are the 2 things that wouls come to mind.
 
Never thought about it that way, good eye opener. Regardless I was going to tell them that I would remain as an emt until I an able to work with them as a medic, what they do here is that if an emt gets certed as medic, they would run a dual medic team, only I wouldn't be in charge of the rig until they get more emts, which I'm ok with. But besides that, is that a good response?
 
Yeah, most importantly though relax but not to the point of appearing to casual

Firm handshake and look not only the questioner but all interviewers in the eyes as you answer questions
 
Not a bad response but I think it's a bit generic. Instead of telling them your strengths and weaknesses show them. Tell them a true personal story (EMS related ideally) about your strengths in a way that they can picture and fits in with what the are looking for. Does that make sense? When you talk about your weaknesses make sure to incorporate how you are improving.

I don't think you getting your medic soon is a weakness at all.

Yea buddy!!!!!!!!! Must of done something right! Got a call yesterday while doing some ride-time for medic school, get my physical friday and I start in 3 weeks!
