Jewish faith and Code status

I looked into the Muslim aspects of codes etc. before I found out I wasn't teaching Afghans, but it is always interesting to get a take on things from another cultural point of view.

For those of you who are Jewish and also work in the healthcare field do you have a conflict between your religious views and personal experience as far as your wishes go? After seeing what we do to some patients at the end of their life would you still want everything done for you? This isn't meant to be a judgmental question I totally respect your decisions just curious.

I'm currently converting (Mother was Jewish, I am adopted and didn't grow up practicing) and its a non issue for me in the field. My private life, yes, I do have wishes that reflect my religious beliefs. For example, I have always wanted my body donated to a cadaver program, but that's a no-go, because there is a big emphasis on how to treat the body and how soon the body is to be buried after death.

However, there is a single law called Pikuach Nefesh, which states that life must be preserved over all the other commandments. This can be seen more with organ and tissue donation rather than a whole cadaver program due to the fact that lives are actually changed by the organs and tissue. The cadaver may go to a school or some other program.

Did that help answer your question?
