The local DMAT team is looking for paramedics. I have always thought about it but I am not sure.

well considering I have no idea what DMAT is I guess I'm not a member. I'm curious though, what is it?

Hold on. Google solved that problem real fast. Sounds like something I'd be into. Are you considering joining up?

I am a member of one; but unless you can obligate yourself for an immediate deployment for at least two weeks, then I suggest you look at Medical Reserve Corps. It is not based upon the National Level but they are the first to respond for local disaster services. Where as DMAT are responded when a National Disaster has been declared and help is asked for.

Medical Reserve Corps is a neat system that involves multiple agencies and staffing from veterinarians, physicians, nurses, to EMS. Much more active as well..

Not a member but contacted /contacted by one

Different DMAT chapters are differently active and run, from what I can deduce, due to the types/numbers of members and their degree of organizaton. There is also pay involved, potentially; I do not know if they have job and housing protection to cover you if mobilized.

Thanks for the input. I have been cutting back on my hours and have some free time available. I was unable to attend the info session they recently had and I know a few people on the team. They get deployed a lot in comparison to some other teams. I will have to mull it over.

Each area has a "region" or zone. Dependent upon the degree of disaster and location if you are deployed. The problem I have seen others have is the deployment issue. Minimum of two weeks immediately, bosses do not always like that. As well, that is a minimum sometimes.. as well, most of it is not emergency care but routine medical care, such as tetanus shots, cleaning wounds, bandaging, even setting up portable potties (public health) etc..

The pay will usually compensate you enough, but I have always spent more (food, water, etc). No one usually gets rich, usually a little in the hole. Remember, you are usually under the orders of a physician and accompanied by nurses, RT's, pharmacist, etc..
