In browsing through the list of live bills introduced into our state congress, I found a bill pertaining to paramedics. They are wanting to do away with certification, and license us instead. The bill includes setting up a seven member board, and a peer review process, among other things. If it goes through this session, depending upon changes that may happen to it, I think it will be a good thing. I signed up for BillTracking, which emails me each day that something happens with the bill so I will keep everyone updated as I hear more.

If anyone is interested in checking out the proposed bill, here's the link: HB1052 - Paramedic Licensing

Let's hope it starts a precedent. I'd love to actually see a license at the end of the tunnel.

I'm no good at reading that legal stuff but it sounds like what they're proposing is set up a licensing board that can set their own requirements to be licensed, and other than that they just change certification to license in a bunch of places?

We have been licensed for several decades I am glad to see that other states that follow pursuit, good luck in your states endeavour.

From what I have been told by my EMT instructor is that Washington is considering going to a license for emt and moving away from certificates. I don't think anything in the near future but I don't know for sure. Just word of mouth on my end.

Yes, they will be setting up a board, and they did change the verbage throughout IN code. Other things that this will do, if it doesn't change to much AND it passes, will be mandate all medics must be 21 or older, the license will be good for 3 years (instead of 2 years with the cert), and there will be fees involved with licensure. Hopefully, that will help cut down on those who go to medic class just for the pay raise.

This could be a great opportunity to increase education requirements (both initial and continuing). Hopefully it will pass and the opportunity will be taken and not passed by.

sounds like a good step in the right direction. hopefully the licensing board is very heavy on education and they bump up the requirements right away.

Oh nice, I hope it goes through for you guys :D

Take Care,
