Hi, i am a 24 year old male. I graduated with a degree in accounting. And i have always wanted to work in the healthcare field. However, i choose sadly to start my business. But now that I am older, i am thinking of becoming an EMT, and maybe just staying there. However, i have this question. You see, back when i was 19 i got addicted to porn. God set me free, and i have been free 4 years to this day. I have never seen anyone naked. I am just worried. Do you people think maybe i should not join this field, considering my past? I want to help people, but i dont want to fall back into an addiction, because i know in this field you see plenty of naked people. Do you guys know of anyone who used to be addicted to porn, but then got free and was able to stay free while doing this job? I would like yalls thoughts on this. Thank you all for your time and consideration.

If you sexualize a naked trauma victim, pysch patient, or any of our other patients we may see undressed then you have problems far more significant than a porn addiction.

Nebula77, how about I dodge the porn issue and just ask you a couple of unrelated questions:

Are you saying you want to become a career EMT, as opposed to starting as an EMT and pursuing further training?
What don't you like about running the business you started?
What convinced you to get a degree in accounting?
Other than helping people, what do you imagine EMS to be about?

I don't really think bad about people. I guess its like PTSD. That was a dark period of my life that i never want to go through again. And it took a lot to recover from that addiction. (I had no accountability partners or people to turn to for help, I was on my own).

I would like to make EMT as a career, i am not sure if that would be a good thing. It looks interesting, being able to help people. And my business is doing alright, but competition is growing strong and I am just worried about the future outlook of my business. Thus, I was thinking of other careers for a back up. And what convinced me to get a degree in accounting? Well, I graduated second from my class in high school, and everyone suggested i go to the university immediately. So I did, but i did not know what I wanted to do. So i majored in accounting because i saw it was a flexible degree with a lot of job prospects. And im not quite sure EMS may involve other than helping people. My apologies.

Don't apologize, you haven't done anything wrong. Most people in EMS are very straightforward.

You are thinking about a field with very high turnover, a lot of stress, and to be quite honest despicable pay. I think that if someone was considering a career and anyone of us were not straightforward we would be doing you a disservice. There is a reason that there is so much burnout, depression, divorce, alcohol abuse, and many other struggles that so many in EMS face. There are also a lot of people who build successful fulfilling careers in EMS, but I would guess that they are the minority.

Nebula77, there's nothing to apologize for. I just wanted to see where your head is at.

As Peak said, EMT pay is pretty pitiful, so doing that full time would likely require careful budgeting and maybe cutting back on whatever lifestyle you're accustomed to. Doing EMS part time while you keep your other job might be a better long-term option, but it would take you longer to gain enough experience to feel comfortable and figure out what you need to learn.

You mentioned going to college without knowing what you wanted to do. I did the same, then tried different jobs before picking a career -- well, two careers. At 24, you have plenty of time to do the same. You can try being an EMT, but don't feel that your only two choices are EMS and your current business. Your degree and the business experience you already have should open some other doors if you're interested.

If there are volunteer agencies in your area, that would be one way of learning more about EMS without committing yourself to a job change. Otherwise, consider taking a "zero-based" approach and make a list of income-producing options that sound interesting. Perhaps the career for you isn't even on your radar yet.

I will only say this:

many of the people you will see naked in EMS, you will wish you hadn't seen naked.
