Is anyone familiar with this program through HUD? They offer HUD houses in "revitalization areas" 50% off list to full-time firefighters, EMTs, police, and teachers. Has anyone participated in it or known someone who has?

We're starting to look for our first home and since we and both of our families are fairly capable (dads owns remodeling biz, uncle is master electrician, etc etc) we are considering taking a serious fixer-upper as an investment opportunity.

It's a great opportunity for a cheap first house with a great opportunity to flip it for a huge profit 3 or so years later. Most are definitely fixer-uppers, though you can sometimes luck out and find a very nice home. A cop friend of mine found a 300k house in a gated community through this program. I believe it is a lotto system to get a house you want, though.

Apparently they update the listings weekly so check back if you're looking for a home.

The kinda lame thing is you have to work where you buy the house (it says you must serve the area- not sure how strict they would be on that) and it looks like it's government EMS only.
