How to become a better candidate for hiring

Hello,

I have a question, how is the hiring process for EMT-basic? do they care about past employments? I was fired from my old job for personal reasons. Will hiring agencies care too much about it? or what kind of applicants are EMS agencies looking for after completing an EMT-basic program? any advice would be good. thanks
 
How long were you at your old job? If it was short term, I probably wouldn't even list them as a job/reference.

Anything substantial, list it and be completely honest.
 
I was only there for 2 months. It was a job that was a really bad fit for me. But what other recommended certifications/licenses etc.. would help in getting hired?

Yes, list all pertinent cets. And most jobs care about your past employement.
 
EMT is really an entry level job. A lot of places really don't require experience to get on. They may give you some kind of written exam, and scoring high on that will increase your chances. Also make sure you can perform your skills competently and be familiar with your county protocols. That really is what is going to give you an edge over some of the EMTs who show up 2 days after passing national and somehow have already forgotten how to splint an extremity (I helped with hiring at my old place. This actually happens). Other than that its really the same as applying anywhere: Show up, dress nice, be polite, etc. Hope that helps and good luck.
 
Unless you are going for a public agency all you really need to get hired is to apply. If they have spots they will more than likely hire you. Yes there may be a little written exam, but it is all stuff you should already know. Some companies will make sure you can properly use a stretcher. Again, something you should know how to use at the end of your EMT course.
 
I've read that listing customer service experience is really helpful, so if you have experience in that, list it. They wanna make sure you are comfortable talking and engaging with people/patients, so customer service experience helps.
 
It's far more important in the interview. When they ask, "so, why do you think we should hire you?"

The answer is, well I have several years of customer service experience and I'm aware that the majority of an EMTs job is forming and maintaining relations. I can ale my past experience and bring it to play with patients and facility staff...

Or something like that.
