How physical is the first few weeks of training?

What's the first few weeks like physically in a normal 16 week semester (edit: for entry level EMT course with lab) where everything is spread out? Specifically, is there a lot of upper body work right away?

I have a physical decision to make now or to postpone (nothing major, and I'm strong), but I already put off EMT once, I don't want to do it again.

I was in the Army, so I'm envisioning hot, sweaty work as soon as we hit the ground with minimal time to rest. Am I dramatizing it too much in my mind?

If I can just make it through the first 2 or 3 weeks, I know I will be fine.

Thanks.

There is very little physical exertion in most EMT classes. You're making too big of a deal out of it.

fixed it.

You'll be fine if you were in the army the most you'll do is moving patients in confined spaces wi.th weird angles for your back

Very rarely will you do anything in EMS that is really physical. In EMT school it is normally not physical at all (with some exceptions). We like to have fun with the students and have them do CPR for about 5 minutes then have them walk down a pretty steep hill and then run up it. Once they get to the top they go back to doing CPR and we drill them with questions. It's pretty fun for the instructors, not so much for the students.

Thanks, everyone. This puts my mind at ease. And firefite, as long as you wouldn't be making me do pullups along with that CPR, I'd relish the challenge. ;)

Thanks!!

EMT school is not like an army school. in an army school, they smoke the bawls off of you to keep attrition rates high on purpose (SFAS, ranger) , before you actually learn anything as a gut check.

Consider EMT school the equivelant of field San class in the army. A lot of didactic, with some "let's go out and play with this equipment " mixed between.

Like the other posters have said- its not overly physical. As long as you are in fairly good shape- able to do compressions and lift with others, you will be fine.
