Just about every city/municipality has a pattern. Can't rule out counties. Every county in my state has no pattern. But learn your local patterns. Once you learn those patterns just about every address will make sense even if you've never been there before.

Some day I will figure out what Boston's "system" is. Right now I'll just be content to learn as many main roads as possible. Stupid cows, if only they walked in grids!

Here in LA County, there is no need for anything but a Thomas Guide. It's an amazing tool that I think is better suited for EMS navigation than any GPS unit. Flipping pages also forces you to get to know your coverage area.
Make sure you know where you are at all times, and try marking the call location with a pencil.
