Hawaii Life Flight, who operates the aircraft, said that the plane was on its way to Waimea, on the Big Island, to pick up a patient when it disappeared off the radar around 9:27 p.m.
A spokesperson said, in part:
There are three crew members on board; there is no patient on board. We are in the process of reaching out to their families.
Our immediate focus is helping the search and rescue teams. Please keep our team members in your thoughts. Out of respect for our team members and their families, we ask for your patience. We will provide updates as soon as we have them.
As is our standard procedure, we have temporarily paused Hawaii Life Flight transports.
Maui Mayor Victorino sent a statement extending his well wishes for the families of those aboard and said that he is working with Gov. Green to provide emergency medical air service for the County of Maui while Global Medical Response’s operations are paused, including possibly mobilizing the Hawaii Air National Guard.
The aircraft is reported to be a King Air twin engine prop plane.
