Hello everyone, im Chris a noob to this site. For the past 2 months have been attending an Emergency medical responder class and planned on attending the EMT class this upcoming august however when i first found out about Hall i was not only impressed but delighted as myself and family are moving to Tehachapi very soon. I had been keeping up with their website and last Tuesday saw they were accepting applications for the Academy. I immediately applied and few days later received the personality test, then the next day got an email inviting me to orientation. I am extremely happy and have a good feeling about this however i did have a few questions/concerns i am hoping someone who works for or has worked for hall can help me out with. First off what is the tattoo policy? Down here in LA im so used to cops, and EMS having sleeves but what about with hall? I know Hall prides its self on their look and professionalism, will having a tattoo on both arms hurt my chances at getting hired? i dont have a sleeve YET but was looking to start finishing it up soon.. as in before the academy starts which is in August.
Second, what is their background check process like? Do they run you through livescan or just use one of the private background serves with a name and DOB?
Lastly, what can i expect after orientation? I know I must take a math and English assessment but assuming i do good on that what comes next? Thanks in advance, i really appreciate it.

No visible tattoos. Great choice by the way. Far superior of a service to anyone in Los Angeles. The way ems should be.

When you say no visible tattoos, im assuming thats in uniform correct? Im also assuming that they offer long sleeve shirts to employees who have arm tattoos to hide them?

I know they have a long sleeve uniform, and I know employees there with arm tattoos that need long sleeves. As to the backgrounds I have no idea, but if you have nothing to hide it shouldn't be an issue.
@CodeBru1984 @NPO @VentMonkey should be able to answer your questions better.

You are provided with long sleeve shirts. You are given 4 work shirts and 4 pants.
As for backgrounds if you haven't committed murder or treason you should be good. They are looking for people 100% truthful.

Good to know.. As for the tattoos will they even find out i have any if i do not tell them? I know its a personal call but should i hold off on finishing up my sleeve until hired?

They might ask if you have any lol so better be honest.

Yeah im defiantly not going to lie about anything but im also not going to tell them unless they ask. Do you have any "visible" tattoos?

None visible and I was open about that due to them asking and than was provided with the policy. It's a great company. Mr.Hall really takes care of his employees.

Great thanks for all the good info i really appreciate it. As for the background check did they end up running your name through some system or run a legit live scan on you?

They do a legit background check. Not live scan though.

Correct me if im wrong but i read somewhere else that as long as you dont have a felony or DUI youre good to go with hall... why is that? Does hall not care too much about Criminal history? Between that and what you said it seems like not a big deal for them..?

Thats a question for HR. I have neither. I do know, AMR highers people with criminal back grounds.

Your reservations about the background check are concerning. I don't know what's in your background that you're hoping they won't find, and I therefore can't speak to whether it will prevent you from getting a job.

Background checks are relatively straight forward, livescan or not. If you have a criminal history, chances are they're going to figure it out.....
 
They will find it what ever it is. It's up to them whether to hire or not.

Who (typically) wants a felon in the back of an ambulance with a patient (most felons have a tough time finding employment regardless of the field)?

As far as the DUI, you are uninsurable with one on your record. It's hardly personal.

Again, if you have a criminal history, or background that will eventually show up with their backgrounds, be up front.

Our VP will sniff you out if you make it that far. If it's meant to be, cool; if not you can always reapply if, and when you're a more suitable fit.

As for the tats:

Any new hire with tattoos past their (short-sleeves) mid upper arm, or that are otherwise visible need to be covered up. This means long-sleeves in Bakersfield summers, enjoy.

And if you see employees with short-sleeves and visible tats they were more than likely grandfathered in before that policy took place.

If you have any more questions you can always ask our HR department, they're plenty helpful.

They do a live scan and have a hired background investigator look into you.
