So, i was offered an EMT-B position at a local hospital (the best in the area) and was pretty stoked about it. But i had to pass the lift test, which i failed because my hand cramped right at the end and i kept drooping the backboard and couldn't get it back on the cot. I was pretty upset. They told me i'd have another shot at it after 30 days if a position was available. Well, the thirty days was up this week and there was a position available. I havent heard a thing from them. I've been working all I can at strengthening my hand and arms to pass this. I called the HR lady, the hiring manager and even stopped by his office twice, just to miss him. No one will return my calls or even let me know what is going on. I just want a simple call back, even if they say they've found someone else but still have me in mind. Is this too much to ask? What should I do? I even took the week long training unpaid that they only offer every few months so i could have a foot-in. If they hire someone else, they'd have to wait a few months to take this training and I can start right away because I already have it. I've been applying at other agencies but am not hearing anything back from them either. Suggestions? I'm pretty bummed about the whole situation and know I can do the job, and pass my test.

If they are ignoring you it could be their way of chickening out on telling you they dont wanna hire you, or the job isnt available. I have had it happen to me.

OR....The job might not be available YET and they are waiting to contact you. IDK. Lift tests can make you or break you. they may be concerned that your hand my cramp again but this time with a pt. Or like I said they may not be hiring at the moment.

I would call once a week or email once a week until I got an answer. Whether I like the answer or not. It's not fair to leave you hanging.

Just get your applications in everywhere. And follow up, follow up, FOLLOW UP! Show your dedication and desire to work for them. It can go a long way.

Dress nice and drop in.

Tell them you want to update your application, and, by the way, did that position open up?

They couldn't hold the first position for me so they filled it right away. They said if another position was open by the time I could try again (30 days), then I could go ahead and do the lift test again. There is a position open, and the guy even told me about it a few weeks ago. I applied and let him know. That's why I'm confused as to why now he won't return my calls or emails. But i've been working and feel I'm ready, so now it's just a game of tag basically.

^^ this.

be humble and unassuming when you go... don't be angry/"why haven't you called me"/etc

I did update my app (over 2 weeks ago), i supposedly had to before even getting considered again. But the funny thing is, I actually ran into the guy tonight, and he asked if I applied after I had left a message telling him I did.

Reapply.

;)..........

Just applied, again, after two supervisors have called me telling me to do so. This process is the most frustrating. I applied two weeks ago and obviously no one got my app then, so will they even get it now?

so heres the thing. at a big hospital like that how many people do you think the HR guy sees and hears from all the time. Maybe when he saw you he remembered your face but not your name kind of a deal. Stayh positive and im sure it will work out in due time.

also, have you been volenteering at a local station by chance. I know in my area they have all sorts of pay-per-call stations that take mostly everyone. An that would def show that you wont drop a pt. Just saying cause im trying o get every bit of leverage i can.

Best Luck!!

Stuff like this passes. You take a moment, do what's needed, then let the rest go for a few days. If you have to, mark a calendar for follow=ups.

All the time in between, it's completely your choice how much you agonize over things 99% out of your control.

I encourage you to thoroughly enjoy your agony, and then put it down and get on to whatever will move you forward.
