Hey y'all. I'm wondering if there are any sorts of classes and extra certs I could get as an EMT, before my medic program. I'm not looking to do it necessarily to be better prepared for medic, but to be able to provide better care, as well as increase my general knowledge base.

The certs I will receive in paramedic are ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, PEPP, and AMLS, so I wouldn't take any of those beforehand, so i'm looking for any other 'specialty' certs that an EMT is capable of getting.

Thanks in advance!

Those would be the best you can get. NIMS is also a good start

EMT-Intermediate.

You already listed the alphabet soup.

I second NIMS. Most employers are going to require the standard FEMA courses. ICS 100, 200 and 700, sometimes 800.

I've already gotten the NIMS 100, 200,700, and 800 for my firefighting classes at the college. Also, I live in nebraska, where there is no EMT-I, just EMT and Paramedic. So for now it looks like i'll have to sit tight certification wise until my medic.

How about some college level science courses? Maybe some composition and math classes as well. Sure you don't get a cool card with your name on it or anything but they will help you and your practice immensely. Much more than the alphabet soup classes.

You could become an AHA BLS Instructor if you're dead set on getting more letters after your name.

you can take PHTLS, PEPP, and AMLS as an EMT. I also have ABLS, ICS100-400, CPR, and a bunch of other random classes (CEVO, etc).
