Today I received a letter from the Maryland Higher Education Commission pursuant to my application for federal student aid that I've been awarded $1100 per semester for two semesters at Anne Arundel Community College. I applied for that aid so I could take the Paramedic course there. There's no way I can afford it on my own, and apparently they agreed with me on that point. So now I can actually go do it.

I actually ammended my application after I originally submitted it to include an interest in several other colleges, including one that many people have recommended to me as being the best area college with a two-year Paramedic AS degree program (Community College of Baltimore County at Essex). The award was specifically for AACC, though. So I'm going to inquire if I can get the award transferred to whichever college I finally decide upon.

But I'm just very relieved to finally know that I'm tremendously closer now to actually going to college and doing what has become my dream. :)

First, CONGRATS !.. good job!

Second, talk to the financial counselors at both colleges on the stipulations of your scholarship/grant it might be "locked" in. Even if this is so, take as many classes as you can. General education anywhere is a good starting point.. never regret geting any education, you can.

Maybe Community College of Baltimore County, will re-review your grant and award & honor as well...

Again congratulations and good luck !

Congrats!!! I had to do the same thing in order to go through college and there's nothing like getting that letter saying they'll give you the money. A whole bunch of doors open for you and it's a great day :)

Good for you!

congrats...

Best of luck to you in your Educational endeavors....

I took the placement tests today at AACC, and had mixed results.

For English, I tested out of the basic sequence and into the advanced-level course, with an option to take an honors seminar course. I pretty much expected to test out of the basic level, so I'm glad about that.

However, for math, I actually placed one step below the lowest credit-level class. That means I'm not able to take a credit math class until I take the highest developmental math class first (intermediate algebra). I only missed college algebra by four points on the test. I do have the option of taking an eight-hour class designed to prepare students for the placement test, then I'd be able to retake the placement test for another shot. This obviously makes the most sense to do.

In high school (13 years ago now), I was actually very good in math. But I guess 13 years of not practicing those skills has let them fade. I think the test prep class will do me a lot of good.

Now I have a dilema in regards to selecting an English class. I reviewed the required books list for each teacher and found only one that had a selection I was interested in. When I mentioned this to someone at my fire station who is currently in the EMT-P program at the same school, he mentioned he had this teacher once and failed her class. He told me she was very feminist, making it easy for the females to pass and hard for the males. He told me a lot of people didn't like this teacher, and told me to check her out on www.ratemyprofessors.com, which I did, and actually she has a :) rating there. A few people did leave comments similar to my friend's, but still, her overall rating is :). So now I'm not sure if I should select this teacher, since I'm a male, and risk that my friend and some of those people on that website are right, or if I should just select some other teacher whose books I'm not really interested in at all. My theory is that if I'm interested enough in the books, I'll be able to get good enough grades to pass, plus the fact the teacher will see I'm interested and am trying. My friend told me if I just go to class on time and keep my head low, don't contradict her, and call her "professor" like she wants even though she's technically not, then I should be fine.
