So I'm trying out a caregiving position because it's more hours but the employer thinks I need first aid training to add to my AHA CPR cert and EMT cert. And says first aid is just teaching you how to bandage and splint... so how did I get my EMT cert if I don't know how to do that? Is there a difference? She's trying to find out if I'm going to end up needing it but what is the difference ?

I am not a legal person or study it. Rid would know better.

As far as I know, first aid is taught by EMTs and ect. EMT-I should more than cover this, I know where I am at my EMT-B made them more than happy. Depends on area maybe? or Insurance reasons, have to be taught by them or a company by them?

California state law used to include First Aid in the official Title 13 scope of practice for EMT-Bs. I believe it was taken out due to ambiguity as to what that consisted of. So it may be a legal thing for them. However, from a practical point of view... I don;t see the need. I had a a brief Job as an "On Site Medic" at a youth correctional facility, where First Aid cert was required for all employees. Those of us in the medical department were either CNAs or EMTs. The CNAs were required to get the First Aid / CPR as part of the orientation process, but they said that the EMTs didn't needed it becasue our scope exceeded FA. As an EMT-I, that training and certification certainly exceeds lay person First Aid and CPR. But just because it makes sence, don;t make it legal.

Tell your employer he is an idiot. First aid training on top of a CPR cert for an EMT? Your EMT-I certification surpasses first aid certification by light years. This guy is probably very ignorant. This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard today.

What type of caregiving position are you applying for? There are several entry level caregiver jobs that the EMT cert does not pertain to. Home health? Kids involved? Nursing assistant? Long term wound care? Each have their own specific certs with their own requirements for their environment and the equipment they have to work with. In some states, an EMT cert also does not apply toward any position except for prehospital. Thus, for this reason some are called ER techs and not EMTs inside the hospital.
