Hundreds across Wisc. discuss possibility of hunting cats

Associated Press
Apr. 12, 2005 07:00 AM

MADISON, Wis. - Feline lovers holding pictures of cats, clutching stuffed animals and wearing whiskers faced-off against hundreds of hunters at meetings around Wisconsin to voice their opinion on whether to legalize cat hunting.

Residents in 72 counties were asked whether free-roaming cats - including any domestic cat that isn't under the owner's direct control or any cat without a collar - should be listed as an unprotected species. If listed as so, the cats could be hunted.

The proposal was one of several dozen included in a spring vote on hunting and fishing issues held by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. The results, only advisory, get forwarded to the state Natural Resources Board

---

La Crosse firefighter Mark Smith, 48, helped spearhead the cat-hunting proposal. He wants Wisconsin to declare free-roaming wild cats an unprotected species, just like skunks or gophers. Anyone with a small-game license could shoot the cats at will.

Lets All Shoot those Precious Kitty Kats.

As a FF, one of my crew mates did decide to do a "public assist" after taking numerous calls from this woman about her cat being stuck in a tree

He talked me into going along, and after about an hour of trying I could take no more. So I did ask her if she has ever seen a dead cat in a tree? She said no, so I said, see they all come down at some point, they have to eat.

Well she got all pi$$y and offended like and 2 days later I was having one of many "You have to be nice to the public because we are here to serve them and besides we are going to be trying for a tax increase this fall" talk with the chief.

I should have hid them in separate closets :(

That'll learn ya!!

But I have to say, after coming home last night and finding a big ole fat cat asleep on my porch, right in front of my door, that had the NERVE to look up at me like I was the problem when I clapped my hands and told him to move....I was thinking hunting cats would be a good thing.

Yep. Cats are arrogant.

I actually think this guy is on the right track. To own a dog in my town it must have a collar with a rabies tag on it. It should be the same for cats and if your cat "refuses" to wear a collar then it must be kept inside. Once it goes outside... free game. I was raised on a ranch where the cats multiplied like rabbits in the summer. We would have to thin them out in the fall to keep them from freezing to death in the winter.

For all of you save the planet types out there, I will gladly trap them and get their little surgery if you foot the bill. I have 7 or 8 in my neighborhood right now at about 70.00 a pop....
