D.C.'s fire department is downplaying an incident in which an Emergency Medical Technician was cut by a fire lieutenant as 'negligent horseplay'. But the victim -- who received ten stitches -- doesn't think so.

"Mr. McLaughlin doesn't appear to believe it was horseplay," said Kenneth Lyons, the head of the ambulance union.

The incident unfolded about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Engine 5, on Dent Place NW. According to a news release, the two on-duty employees were "playing around". According to Lyons, the firefighter, Lt. Lawrence Clarke, started swinging a knife at EMT Ed McLaughlin without provocation.

you have got to be kidding.......

Ah Geez... I thought I hid that dang Code Stupid Button........ :glare:

It's unfortunate to see such behavior coming from a lieutenant of a fire company. Luckily there is an ambulance union where this EMT works; otherwise I'm sure it would have been swept under the rug and downplayed even further.

Same thing happened to me. I was working at Del Taco and my manager was playing with a knife. Long story short I got a nice cut on my arm. Took two layers of stitches totaling about 15 or 16. There is no excuse to be playing with knifes or any other thing that can cause serious injury to someone.

Do you think? Remember the video of the firefighter kicking and striking a bystander and what occurred or the numerous situations of cheating, refusal of transporting the patient, etc.? All that occurred was changing to firefighter only, or a slap on the hand..

Well, the jury might be out on this one..literally.

One man's horseplay is an other's negligent homicide. Anyone who plays with knives or guns, etc, needs to be fired, and I would not ride with them.
