Hello,

I have a full time job but am planning to volunteer for my local Search and Rescue team. I met with a few EMT's from their group and they recommended Warrior School (in Tucson,) since I work already and I am good with accelerated classes. They require that each team member be qualified as:

1) EMT Basic w/ EMT Wilderness Certification
2) Wilderness First Aid
3) CPR-Pro
4) Firefighter Type 2

I need these qualifications before even considered into their recruit program. So here's my plan, and yes it cost a ton of money but I think its worth it. Please note I don't have any intentions of becoming a full time or part time EMT, just volunteer.

As far as WEMT/WFA, I am planning to get this at SOLO Wilderness Medicine. They have a 5-day program where you can upgrade your current EMT certification to Wilderness EMT.

That's a pretty dang comprehensive set of skills to even start volunteering for SAR! I'm particularly surprised at FF2. WEMT only makes sense over EMT, and CPR is a pretty integral part to either of those courses. Does your SAR team have some urban interface or brush fire apparatus, or is FF2 primarily for the rescue techniques I presume it teaches?

FF2 is for the rescue techniques but they do actually go out and fight wildfires up north such as Flagstaff, Prescott, ect. in Arizona.

I am going to get FF2 certification at the Arizona Wildfire Academy in Prescott, Arizona. Their requirements are higher than any other SAR team in Arizona. Even with all these skills (which are only the basics), it doesn't guarantee you a spot, as you must first get selected from long time veterans of the team. (All other skills and requirements are taught on-site)

That is the SAR I am planning to join

I did my EMT/WEMT at SOLO for my initial EMT cert. They're absolutely fantastic. WEMT is a fun course, especially if you like spending time outside and learning improvisational techniques! Guaranteed you'll enjoy it :)

I would do my EMT/WEMT at SOLO if I could, but its a four week course, which would mean me taking a month off from work. I will get my EMT certification in Arizona, and do a five day course with SOLO module for WEMT

You have to have FF1 before even thinking of FF2, that normally requires a fire academy.

WEMT is just like a week long course.

By FF type 2 I believe they are referring only to woodland type 2 qualifications and not the structural FF2 course that needs a true fire academy.

There website also says you get 18 months to get your EMT once you join?

Wmi

Hey, I did the week long WMI WFR to upgrade my EMT to WEMT. Really enjoyed the program. NOLS/WMI has a great leadership curriculum. I think they did a great job. If you have any questions about WMI feel free to PM me

Aren't WFA and WEMT redundant and then some?

....Original snark redacted.....

OK - I get it now. Yes, in the context of the position requirements in the OP, WFA and WEMT are redundant and then some if they are both, in fact, requirements (and not an either/or proposition). Sorry for the confusion.

No. WEMT is a certification that is not state recognized and comes from WMI or SOLO like the WFR. EMT comes from the state or NR. They are totally different certifications from different governing bodies. Don't get the point of your question/statement as it really doesn't answer the OPs question or contribute anything...

Then work on your reading comprehension perhaps? WEMT requires EMT. WFA, which OP said was also a requirement, is a first aid card with hours added on with a wilderness focus. That card is no more state recognized than the W part of WEMT. If they are requiring a WEMT, then isn't WFA redundant?
