Certified as EMT-B through UT Southwestern, Dallas, moved to Charlotte, NC. Have completed reciprocity process and am now officially certified NC EMT-B, nationally registered also.

How do I find a job as an EMT-B with no experience? Have applied to Medic911, local volunteer fire houses, CMC, Novant and others to no avail. How do I go about securing ride alongs? Not only have I applied, but I have also personally gone to the various fire departments, medical facilities etc. Am willing to relocate within a reasonable distance if that is what it takes. I really need to find a job so that I can obtain HCE hours for PA school application. I have considered EMT-P since it 'appears' as though employment may be easier to obtain, but this will set me back another year which is prohibitive.
I already have my BS in Bio too

Any suggestions, ideas appreciated!!

Have you looked at the State employment opportunities page? Lots of stuff posted there.

Also I'm surprised the local vollies don't have openings; you should try Long Creek, Mint Hill, Matthews Fire & EMS, Pineville, or even North Mecklenburg Rescue?

Hey JackieO,
I'm in a similar situation but a few hours away in Raleigh, NC. What I have found is that in large metropolitan areas such as Charlotte and the Triangle area of NC is that they want Paramedic's with experience. But as for EMT-B's with little to no experience they won't have us. It just takes too much time and effort I have heard. That also applies to Volunteer agencies as well. However as you get further out of the large cities those are the agencies in need of personnel and they are willing to take on an EMT-B and train. My current job as an EMT-B I must drive an hour just to get to work. Hopefully in a couple of years I can transfer to a job a little closer to my area. Good Luck and let us know how it goes. :D

Raleigh/Wake county (as well as several privates in the Wake County EMS system), Durham County EMS, and there are plenty of county based EMS systems in that area.

In many cases, experience doesn't matter; how you do on the written exam, the practical exam, a scenario, and a panel interview are what matters. But experience can help add to your starting salary

check out the website, the more places you apply to, the better your chances of getting the job.

Went to North Meck, Pineville, have already been to Mint Hill and Matthews. North Meck said they could use some help. Picked up app and am completing. Thank you Christopher! Will check out Long Creek either today or tomorrow.

Forgot to add that I have completed my BLS HCP and am now pursuing ITLS in July which is next one offered here. Have a friend at CMC who is an RN who is arranging for me to do a rotation and observation with EMS through their facility which is just now having their grand opening.

NCEMT1011,
Thank you for offering your experiences along with suggestions. I too am willing to drive or even relocate if necessary; hence will definitely pursue other more rural areas. I have been applying to any/all EMT-B jobs posted on the state EMS site.

I appreciate all of the suggestions and posts. It is not easy these days to land any job anywhere for most.

I work for MEDIC. PM for additional info. We're hiring positions of all experiences levels.

I don't have 5 posts and am prohibited from PM or sharing my email in a post.

Leaving for a meeting with Samaritan House re: possible volunteer opportunity. Will be returning early afternoon.

Thank you for your help. Will make some additional posts in order to satisfy requirement. Trying to figure out a go around in the mean time.
btw: have application on file with MEDIC

Does AMR service your area? They always seem to be looking for warm bodies.

Thanks. Researching rural areas. Hoping to not have to drive too far, but willing to do what it takes to get my foot in the door.

I am an EMT-B in Charlotte. I passed the Medic assesment back in may. What can i Expect next and when is the next emt-b academy?

If you passed, then your on the list of new-hire considerations. I'm not sure when the next new hire academy will begin. We currently have a group of new hire EMT completing the last portion of their orientation. So it may be a few months til the next one.
