You can apply at HVA. I work at U Mich Med Center and still see their BLS units/guys around regularly. A quick look at their website and emt's can apply online.
If you just want experience, volunteer with the Red Cross. They have a very active FAST program, and provide prehosptial BLS care. On several occasions I have heard stories of FAST emt's providing care for several patients for over 50 minutes while waiting for Detroit EMS to transport to the ED. FAST has ATV ambulances and transport on site of events to first aid stations. FAST can do pretty much everything a BLS ambo could.
