I'm moving to Austin in a few weeks, providing I can find a job first. I'm a freshly trained EMT from UCLA's prehospital training program and I already applied to Austin county EMS, which is pretty clearly the best position around. But, outside of this, does anyone know people hiring in Austin? I've looked at AMR so far but haven't seen any opportunities outside of that.

I don't know who is specifically hiring, but systems to look at in the area (that you haven't listed):

Acadian (IFT only)
San Marcos-Hays County (South of Austin- 911 and IFT)
Wimberly EMS (South of Austin- 911)
Marble Falls (West of Austin- 911)
And Tech spots at any of the hospitals of course

Thanks for the info, these are all great options that I hadn't stumbled upon before (except for Acadian).

Austin County EMS is no where near Austin. The City Of Austin is in Travis County, TX. Austin-Travis County is the sole 911 transport provider within the city, and there are no IFT's. However, to work the street, you must be a Paramedic. You can work dispatch if you are an EMT.

In Austin, only Acadian and AMR have the franchises from the city to operate IFT's only.

About an hour north in Temple, Scott and White EMS does both 911 for a large portion of Bell County, and IFT's.

Capitol Ambulance covers an area northwest of Austin, and does both 911 and IFT's

Allegiance Ambulance is an IFT service, in Georgetown about 20 minutes north of Austin:

And Serenity EMS is new to the area, and I don't know much about them:

You're a little off on your ATCEMS info, WestTac. ATC does in fact employ basics to work on the street.

Also, I'm pretty sure OP was referring to ATC, and not Austin county, despite how he may have typed it...

Cool. Thanks for the clarification....I didn't know that plan actually was implemented. Guess I need to do some catching up.

Yeah, implemented almost a year ago I think. Actually, everybody hired now starts off at essentially the basic level (basics and medics), then you have to promote up to the paramedic level of provider. I forget the actual title they use to differentiate the two levels.

The titles are:

Field Medic 1 (basic)
Field Medic 2 (medic)

i believe..

Yeah, those! Thanks!

I know a lot of medics that aren't too thrilled to be working an uncertain amount of time as a basic instead of as a medic.

That's the reason I won't even consider atcems anymore lol

i am still a basic so i'll be testing with them.. seems like a good place to get some basic experience before a paramedic course.
