Hi all,

My name is Tyler, I'm 17 and just starting my EMT-B class. I Turn 18 two days before I'm supposed to take the NREMT test, so it all works out B). I'm already a Certified Nursing Assistant and am really excited to get into EMS. I'm looking to become a parimedic before I'm 21, then go on to the police academy. After that nursing school. Then hopfully I'll be able to get a job as a DPS flight nurse. Hope to learn a lot here.

See you in the foums!

Welcome to the forum Tyler.

Hey there, welcome.
I hope to do the same thing as far as taking the course while I'm still 17. Good luck with it!

Sounds like my plan! (minus the Medic thing). I guess I'll have to hand off the "youngest EMT in AZ" title to you! lol. I got my Basic last Fall after I turned 18. One piece of advice before you start: try to find a job or at least see if there are openings in your area. I got my EMT and I still work food service at a Hospital, and stocking at Target because most companies want EMTs to be 18. I didn't bother to do any research beforehand so now my cert is 1/4 expired and I haven't used it yet! Just something to be aware of.

Good luck man! You should be fine!

Most places around here want 21... It really sucks. I'll probably just keep working the front desk at super 8 for a while *sigh*. All I can seem to find for under 21 is temp work. The hospital hires at 18, but I have to graduate high school first. So I'll be certified in December, but probably cant work until June.

At least I'll be able to start the EMT-P course sooner (have to have been EMT-B for at least one year before you can apply). B)

Cool. If you plan on coming down to the valley after your Basic class, I know a place (where I got my basic) where you can get your Medic and you don't have to wait a year. Also, it's an accellerated program so its like ~14 months or so. You could have your medic by 20! lol

With the hospital, I'm able to transfer to the ER after 6 mo's there so that may be my way in. PM me if u need some more info!

Come back when you have accomplished this... As well most larger services require you to be at least 21 to even start working as an EMT or Paramedic. Why go to a Police Academy to go to nursing school?.. Those two have nothing in common. As well, most require one to be at least a Paramedic for the minimum of five years as well or as a nurse for an additional five years with ICU experience.

Let's try late 20 to maybe early 30's....

I know its kinda a funny order, but I'm not entirely sure on the nursing side yet, and there is A LOT of stuff to do as a police offier/EMT-P. I think government job sounds nice, be retired by 45... SWEET!!!

I know a couple jurisdictions in the area that hire police officers that rotate as police, fire, then EMS.

Congratulations and welcome on board! Just a word of caution, while you have wonderful dreams and it is very refreshing to see a young man have such, take it one step at a time, give yourself some time in each field and be sure to not get burned out. It is very easy to do when working with patients and seeing sickness, disease, old age, etc. take it's toll on those you work with on a daily basis.

I am a clinical tech, work with our nurses at our hospital and have been a volunteer EMT-B for 4 and a half years now. At not much older than you, I started as a CNA in hospice and that is my passion too, but I got burned out years later after loosing my grandmother, my uncle then my father in law a year apart. Did office work for a while but am back.

Welcome to the life. good luck.

Its great to see a young person like you with a plan! Most your age are just worried about what kind of wheels they have on their vehicle or how loud their speakers are.

You sound very goal oriented and you have the right kind of goals. I applaud you! Never lose sight of your goals no matter what gets in your way.

Rid... some places (like MD State Police, and US Park Police) hire or train medics as sworn officers for dual-role flight crews... The OP talks about a DPS chopper... I assume AZ DPS (Highway patrol) which I think runs similar to MD State Troopers.

As for working at 18 vs. 21... that seems to depend on the locale... the OP might get hired, but as a non-driver, might be a driver/EMT... might only work transport, or might be totally SOL until 21.
