Hey I recently Got a job as a medic in Ut 2 months ago but already lost the job due to getting hurt in a snowboarding accident. (Utah is a right to work state and I was forced to resign.)

I have been told that they often will take back employees in situations like this once i am healed up but the company offered me no guarantees.

So i would like to get reciprocity in another state and increase my opportunity to get another job.

Which state is easiest to gain reciprocity and also get a job?

Well for Oregon or Washington reciprocity you need to have an AAS in EMS or a bachelors degree in something else, so if you don't have either one then California will be your best bet. That being said, I'm not so sure the job market is looking real great in California right now, but I could be wrong.

Ok. I do have a bachelor's in EMS administration actually. So what agencies will hire a newer medic and of oregon or washington (coastal areas) which would be easiest to get into?

I don't know a whole lot about who might be hiring right now. I know that Adventist in Tillamook county (Oregon) just had a few positions open, but I'm not sure if they'll filled them already. Another one to check out would be Metro West or AMR up in the Portland area.

EDIT: Another company to try is Cal-Ore Life Flight down on the southern Oregon coast, I don't know how good of a company they are, but I do remember one of my classmates got hired on there not too long ago.

Washington does not currently require a degree for reciprocity. However, you'll find most (90%) of the ALS in Coastal Washington is fire based. That means lots of applicants for a few jobs. The small bit that is NOT fire based is either private or hospital based, and they are not career positions.

If you're thinking of a specific area, let us know and maybe we can point you in the right direction.

Thanks for correcting that, I totally thought they did.

Hello my name is Justin. i live in the Salem, oregon area and i'm going to chemeketa community college for the EMT Basic course, I went to Rural metro salem today just to get a feel of what the company is like and i was really impressed by them. I plan on doing the EMT B course and then going to work at an ambulance company for a while and then going back later on to become and EMT P. Can you tell me a little more info on rural metro if you wouldn't mind? How much does an EMT B make hourly when they first start out of school and is it possible to work full time with rural metro?? Stuff like that. Just curious

Thanks Justin

Justin,

Here is the website for Rural/Metro and the website for Rural/Metro Salem. I think they might be helpful to you.

http://www.ruralmetro.com/

http://www.ruralmetrowest.com/locations/oregon.html

I suggest if you are interested in R/M Salem, they you try to set up a ride-a-long with them where you are able to see up close and personal what it would be like to work for R/M. They might also be able to better answer questions that you might have concerning availability of jobs and pay scale right out of EMT schooling.

I hope this helps.
