Looking to the future here. I'm still in school for EMT-B, but I've been thinking about where I want to go from there. I was interested in possibly going the route of emergency room management. Anyone have any input on this?

Emergency room management?

What do you mean?? To do any managing in the ED you'll likely need to be an RN or physician, and start off in a clinical position and work your way up.

Responsible for patient flow and such. I've read up on some of the qualifications required after posting this thread and it seems to be quite and undertaking. Usually requiring a BA and some management background. Maybe a little too far into the future. Still learning the ins and outs.

It's more of an organic thing. Hopefully.

A doctor orders a pt up for OR, or out for xrays, or down for morgue, etc. Then a clerk makes it so. Urgency and prioritization are/should be professional functions stemming from medical experience and expertise.

When "managers" are placed from above instead of grown from within, bad things happen usually.

Have you considered dispatch or medical case management?

For an Emergency Department Manager one would typically need:

RN License
Bachelors degree required with Masters preferred
Five years of emergency nursing experience
Supervisory experience
Alphabet soup: ACLS, PALS, CEN, TNCC, etc

I have an interview with a local hospital to work in the ER as an EMT. They term the position CMT.(certified medicial technition) I will work on a team of nurses and doctors assistint with whatever needs to be done. Im looking forward to getting started. Its going to be different than pre hospital care and Im up for the challenge. The ER Shift Supervisor of nursing will be my boss. Hope this helps give you an idea of how it may structure for you. Good luck!!
