I'm a new EMT and am wanting to get the lastest in emergency medical care to help better myself and stay up to date. I've seen JEMS and EMS but they seem to flashy to me and not as technical as I'd like. I'd prefer something along the lines of the NEJM which is boring but technical. I plan to advance to a PA or MD so even if it also deals with hospital emergency medicine then that's fine too. I'm also looking for actual journals, not just online. I just like paper.

I found the "Journal of Trauma" but at $487 it's a little much for me. Even the NEJM is only $160 with weekley issues. Journal of Trauma appears to be monthly.

Then I found the "Journal of Emergency Medicine" but they want $283 and it looks to be monthly.

This one looked promising and has access to all kinds of stuff. Unfortunately it's all online. "Journal Watch" with subspecialities in emergency Medicine

Does anyone have any suggestions for EMS journals that are very technical and isn't going to force me to add a tip jar to the ambulance?

Journal of Emergency Nursing

They're all going to be expensive....

You may be able to visit a local college's library and read some journals. I'm lucky to live near a medical/nursing/dental school so if I wanted to, I could run over there and read lots of cool stuff in their library. Never needed to though because I've been a student and have free online access to lots of databases and journals.

There is the Prehospital Emergency Care journal, but it's a quarterly publication and I'm not sure how much it costs to receive it. Additionally, you might want to see if there's a local college or university with an open computing lab since they'll generally get a bunch of journals under a common subscription, which including Journal of Emergency Medicine and Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Just to build on JPINFV's suggestion, a year's subscription to PEC is available through the NAEMT for $56.

See if your employer, local vollie stations, or county EMS agency maintains a library that they'll let you use. Some do, and they aren't always well-publicized.

You think with all the pharmacuetical company advertising subsidies those Journals would be cheap :D

Seriously I have to agree with the strange fellow in that van passing out candy .... I got free access to a gazillion journals while I was at school.
