Hi all.

I have a quick question. I would do a search, but I don't think it will answer my question perfectly.

When I was 18 (I am 19 now), I was driving home from Washington DC and I hit a tractor trailer. It ripped one side of my parents car, but did not do any damage to the truck. I wanted to stop and fill out an accident report, but my parents did not let me. There were no injuries, and no damage to anything besides our car.

Here is the question. I am interested in getting into the EMS field, as some of you might remember from an earlier post. Will this prevent me from getting a job? I do not have any tickets, and no other accidents besides hitting a curb while learning to drive and folding in some mirrors (the only damage these caused that I know of was to my tire when I hit the curb).

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Not really a problem. You may not be able to drive in some places until your 21 anyway. As long as you don't get into any accidents between now and 21 you should have the all clear.

Thanks. I probably wouldn't be doing anything until after college or at least for a year, so that should help too. Glad to hear it won't be a major problem though.

If you didn't fill out a report and submit it to the DMV, then I don't think they would be aware of the incident.

Yeah, but I should still put all my cards on the table when I have an interview if they ask. I won't volunteer the information, but if they ask I will tell them the truth.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Stay safe.
Eric

Yes always be honest.

If your insurance company doesn't know, it won't count against the EMS company insurance which what I think the main issue is. If the accident was handled out of pocket by your parents, its alot less of an issue.

I know for me (I am 19), the EMS agencies wont hire anyone under 21 if there are any moving violations on your driving record. And if you are over 21 then you can't have any withing a 36 month period. I have no idea if they will hire any non-driving personnel.

If you want to know what your driving record looks like I say just go to the DMV and ask for one. Might cost 5 or 10 dollars though.

Might as well do it near the end of your class. Every company I've ever interviewed at wanted a copy of my driving record at the time of interview.

I don't think it is on my driving record, as there was no accident report. There is an insurance surcharge. I don't have any moving violations (never even been pulled over), so that shouldn't be a problem.

Every application I have ever filled out has asked about reportable accidents. Yours is not considered a reportable accident so don't put it on the application and you can honestly say no in an interview if asked about accidents as it's not a reportable accident.
