I volunteer at a medium size squad that takes driving very seriously. We require CEVO III and CEVO Maneuvers every other year from all drivers, and new drivers have to do 5 hrs non-emergent driving, and 5 hrs emergent driving as part driver training program.

However, our squad has a lot of younger volunteers, being that we have a college in town, and a lot struggle with the size of the rigs (173" Type III), maneuvers, situational awareness, and basic driving. Common problems are braking, accelerating, excess box roll, speed (both too fast/too slow), scanning/situational awareness, not anticipating other drivers.

I'm looking for ideas on how to train on these issues, as sometimes simply explaining to these members "to accelerate slower" or "slow down sooner" doesn't work.

I've already heard of:
bowl of water on the stretcher
driver verbalizes what they see (to the trainer) as they are scanning

What others do you all use?

The only thing I ever used was practice. And then more practice when you get your first hip fracture patient who screams at every bump you hit. During my EVOC (CEVO) class it seemed all the employees who drove cars were having the most problems where as those of us who drove trucks it wasn't an issue because the size is about the same.

I've heard of the 'egg on the gas and brake pedal'. You need to pretend that there is an egg between your foot and the pedals and push very gently as to not break the egg. I've never used it so I don't know if it works.

Train them more?

We require 2 classroom days plus practical road test for non emergent then another forty hours of documented driving in logbook and another road test for emergent driving

And hi low is way cooler than yelp :D

Try this

being a former cop I am trained extensively in emergency driving skills. That being said and as my primary duty is to drive the ambulance. Our department has a surefire training method for drivers.
They took me out in an old decommissioned ambulance with worn out shocks. they went to the bumpiest dirt road in the county, drove 25 mph over the speed limit and swerved to make sure they hit pothole they could. All I can say is I am so glad I didn't eat breakfast and I have mastered throttleless cornering
oh yeah, I was in the back by myself, with no AC
