Wow as the name indicates I don't know where to start with this thread. Well first off I'm a 22 year old male, I finished my EMT course In may and I got my EMT License In July after taking the Illinois state exam. Since then I've applied for about 8 private companies I think and I still haven't found work. Due to this long lay off I think I have forgotten stuff I learned while In the EMT course(I don't necessarily have photographic memory or any kind of long term memory0. With this In my mind I everyday try to review some stuff and individually read chapters day by day, but mentally I always find myself thinking about other things as I read, I don't know maybe It's because I feel frustrated due to the fact that I don't have a job. Although I'm very eager to start working I also feel as If I'd know what I'm doing once I actually do start working because I've just been sitting around doing nothing. To complicate matters I just got my drivers license a few months ago and I don't consider myself a good driver and I just moved to Chicago a few years ago and I'm not familiar with getting around here. I also In the future would like to become a Medic but my friend told me you have to have some kind of experience with working on private ambulance before you can apply for a position In a medic course, I was just wondering If this Is true and any other general advice would be great. Thanks

hi drose, welcome to the forums.

I can't really comment on the job situation and stuff down there, but I can tell you that up here it's very hard to get a job as an EMT for a large urban area without any experience, you might have better luck with rural services. The same sort of thing applies for Paramedics up here, they generally don't take EMT's with no experience, I think the minimum is around a couple years experience, again, I'm not sure if it's the same down there, but I would assume it's similar.

After I completed my EMR course I went for about 2 years without even opening a text book and then when I did my EMR refresher course it all came back very quickly, EMT obviously has a lot more stuff to memorize, but since you're brushing up on reading and trying to stay current, I'll bet you won't have too much trouble once you get back into it, stay positive, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Keep refreshing yourself, take classes, but get a job. Don't wait for poverty to snag you first.
That said, cast a wide net. Consider moving await, even far away.
