OK, this actually happened to a friend of mine, and I am reprinting her story with her premission. And I feel that this is newsworthy as this could have turned fatal very easily. This is a reminder to please check your fireplaces before you use them this winter and to check your CO monitors to make sure they are working properly.

Heres the story:

Ace saved my life yesterday. I lit the gas logs and laid down to rest a little bit, as I'd just gotten back from Wisconsin. After about 30 minutes he started whining. I was a bit groggy and looked out the windows to see what he was whining at, then I tried to let him out and I laid back down. He wouldn't go out and was growling at me. That's all very odd for him, he rarely vocalizes unless he sees something to chase outside and the only time he's ever growled is when he gets his ears cleaned.

Finally, I figured out that my husband had shut the flue on the chimney while I was gone (he's convinced leaving it open costs money) and I hadn't checked it before I lit the logs. I opened some windows and the worst that happened was a headache for me and some stomach problems for Ace. He's better now though, and is snoring away next to the fire (with the flue open this time).

It all reminds me how thankful I am for my mutt. He's likely not meant for retriever games but we have fun trying. I'm very thankful that he has more common sense than his owner.

Have a safe and happy holiday guys.B) :)

It never ceases to amaze me how animals know these things. I knew someone who suffered from siezures and her dog always let her know when she was about to have one so she could prepare. I'm glad your friend is ok!

I always like reading these stories. CO detectors need to be in every house.

I'm glad your friend is doing well!

sans the addage?

......the more people i meet, the more i like my dog....
