Does an expired physical cause your ambulance driver's certificate to expire too?

Hello all... I got my ambulance driver's certificate in California about 2.5 years back and it states it expires in September of 2015 (when my driver's license also expires). I also got my DL-51 physical then, but I let that expire this year in June 2014 because I didn't need or want it at the time because I was headed in a different direction. Now, I find myself needing it. So I could swear that because I let my physical expire, that I would have to completely renew the ambulance driver's certificate by taking the exam and pay the fees. However, when I came into the DMV today in Carmichael, CA with my DL-51, EMT card, etc. and money and studying ready to go, they said that I did not have to renew and that all I had to do was drop off the physical form. I walked out thinking, great! Now, the more I think about it, the more I am wondering whether the guys know what they are doing at the office and if I am in jeopardy or not. Moreover, the gentleman scanned my physical but said that there was some sort of glitch in terms of whether or not he could upload it... so that was sort of a red flag for me... I get the feeling they're going to call me in soon to come in to take the exam.

At the end of the day, this is my responsibility and I want to find out what's correct so I don't put my career at stake before I apply for a job. My gut tells me I have to renew the driver's certificate completely based off of my studying, but I would rather save the money for now if I could and the hassle (because I would have to pay for my driver's license renewal AND my ambulance certificate renewal together since both would expire in a year and I want both to last longer than that (ie: 5 years)... so an extra year is helpful in terms of finances and hassle).... plus I don't know if I'd like to work for more than a year as an EMT.

So could you all tell me if my certificate has officially expired or if there is a way to find out whether or not the physical will go through? Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thank you.

No it's just the dl-51. They each expire separately.

That is true, but don't let that fool you, the guys at the dmv have no idea what's going on.

However, you need all of those things to be able to do your job. If you have an expired DL51, you are out of service.

What we have found is depending on the dmv office you go to it can take a month or more to send off your dl51 to Sacramento for processing. This will cause you to show up in a dmv pull by an employer as expired. So when you turn in the paperwork ask them to send it asap if possible and explain it is for your ambulance certification and employment
