Do you need to take a urine drug test to get this permit?

(Ive had to take like 3 of them already and I haven't even started work yet )

Err, what state are you in?

Search first.

What do you mean by a 'permit?' Are you sure you don't mean a state license or NREMT certification?

And ps- you're going to get flaque (not from me) about asking (in your 1st post) about drug testing. I recommend a search before.

I know how it looks asking this question, but Ive spent hundreds of dollars on all these licenses/permits/registries/physicals/and on and on and on and on...all for bureaucracy to earn a quick buck, over and over again.

And now they want me to go to the department of transportation for a EMT Permit(whatever that is), and now they want me to pay another 142 dollars for it! This is ridiculous...and I was asking if I need to take ANOTHER urine test because of the price, I wanna know what I'm getting charged so much for.

It would seem logical that your future employer is better suited to answer your query.

Oh yeah, their phone number is no longer working, I think its changed, so I haven't been able to ask them directly, but I' going there first thing in the morning.

Are we speaking about the Los Angeles City DOT Permit? I can speak about that, if it is what we are talking about.

BTW, you should shorten your username handle because it takes up the whole screen

/me sighs.

Where are you? We can't answer any questions without knowing where you are since this permit is a local issue.

It had to be done.

Yeah it is for Los Angeles City DOT. Whys it so expensive, and do I have any more things to pay for after this?

1. I wouldn't ask an employer if you have to take a drug test for the job. That just seems dumb, even if you aren't on drugs. Makes you look kind of shady.
2. What kind of Ambulance Service gets their number changed without some sort of forwarding? That just seems strange.

I already tested for my employer 5 days ago, that's why I'm asking whats up with this permit I have to pay for now.

As for the number look for yourself, google their number and see what you get:

Yes, it's a rip off. Yes, it is a money making scheme set up by the city in order to exercise its own absolutely redundant regulations over the private ambulance industry, and yes it unfairly punishes the EMTs who are paid basically minimum wage.

No, there is nothing you can do about it, expect to pay it like the rest of us. I just had to pay 200 to renew it and my company would not reimburse a cent of it.

You will not have to take a urine drug screen. You will, however, wait in line with 20 smelly taxi cab drivers who are regulated out of the same office who will touch you and bump you and cut in front of you. You will also be fingerprinted and your picture taken.

Add this to the 1,705 other reasons I didn't get into street EMS.

Companies are always looking for EMT/Medics yet they make them pay for everything with no reimbursement. Sounds a lot like the security field. Sure there are a few that will treat you like family but they are the rare exception.

Some will help with the education expenses if one wants to advance to Paramedic.

In CA, you can still find an EMT-B class for $20 - $22/semester credit hour (approx 6 - 12 credits) at the community colleges. Even with another $250 for expenses, that is not too extreme.

With 110 hours invested for education time, less then $500 in expenses and people who decide they hate the job after 1 week when they discover it involves boring patient care without a lot of action TV stuff, why should a company pay for all the initial fees?

Thank you for your answer. Good to hear I'm not the only one who thinks this is pretty unfair.

Also, how ridiculous I have to pay for fingerprinting after having been life scanned 3 times already.

And for those who think I'm shady, this company who's hiring me does random testing, so Id be stupid to dope.

Can you PM (private message) me with the name of the company hiring you? I can help you out quite a bit navigating the private industry in LA

Just a note- - it is Live Scan.... the digital fingerprint system.

Only had to have it done once, and that was for a security license... I love the Commonwealth of PA!

Good old Live Scan and California privacy laws. I had to get it twice because the DMV and OC EMS can't share information.

On the thought of costs, please stop complaining. Really, look at the education and licensing costs to become a physician. Step 1 and step 2 clinical knowledge are $480 each and step 2: clinical skills is over $1000. So, come on now, the few hundred dollars to be done is peanuts.
