hi I just got a job as a caregiver for a 9 yr old boy who has severe mental and physical cerebral palsy and has the capacity of a 3-month old. I love him already and I was just wondering as well as being a fulfilling job, does this count at experience? I am an EMT-B

sure it counts as experience babysitting a disabled person. What's the emergency?

It counts as life experience and it will benefit you in some situations when you do work on the road...good for you. There is a special place in heaven for those who do good works :)

Well, its definitely experience for a CNA position. Once you are finished at that job, if you want to do it again, there will always be people looking for personal caretakers, and previous experience is the most important thing.

In nursing, this would possibly count as experience. However, this wouldn't count as EMS experience.

While that work may not count towards Nursing and won't count as EMS experience, you WILL gain a LOT of experience dealing with people. I also think you're going to learn a LOT about yourself in the process. If you continue down the road of being a caregiver to people with disabilities, you're going to become MUCH more acutely aware of normal behavior patterns for people with specific disabilities. You'll learn when something isn't right. That can be crucial for your patient, especially when he or she can't speak.

My other job is working with kids with mental health disorders and severe emotional disturbances. I can say it has definitely helped me be a more compassionate and understanding EMT during behavioral emergencies. So although it doesn't help with the official experience aspect this new job is still going to benefit you as an emt.

i should also note, that i did the same type of work for the summer while i was looking for a job as a nurse.

18 year old child with the body of a 10 year old and the mind of an infant. anoxic birth injury. It really taught me how to feed someone who can't communicate. But i never counted it as work experience, more like getting 8 bucks an hour for charity work. It was really just to give his family a break from 18 years of full time care.

Yes it will help you become a more aware and confident person and you will probably have a lot of awesome fun doing it.

Best job I ever had was working with children who have severe emotional disturbances. Being severely emotionally disturbed myself it's no wonder Brown fitted in! :D

Oh, and did somebody mention an emergency?

*Brown sprints in with Thomas Pack slung over his shoulder ready to whip out the suxamethonium

It is health care experience. It is employment experience. The family would make a good refrence.

As far as how much weight it will give you for another job, it depends on the person making the hiring decesion.

Good luck with the job and job search.
