So as it is, I'm only a few weeks away from graduating my EMTB class. Yay me.

My husband and I are planning on moving (right now we're thinking TN, but that's not really relevant I think). But because we have a five-year commitment to our station, it's not happening any time soon. Which is fine; we can save for a nice place.

I'd like to continue on to be AEMT. Hooray for me again.

I guess my question would be, after that, should I go ahead and go on to Medic, do the year and a half course, get licensed in Michigan, then we move and get re-licensed in another state? Or, would I be better off waiting on the medic until we move so there isn't a whole bunch of wasted time and effort and money? What's the to-do?

Depends. How do you know you'll even like EMS? I'd work in the field for a bit before locking down your plans.

I do think that AEMT is (mostly) a waste of time and money. If you want to be a medic, be a medic. As long as you're a NREMT-P, state reciprocity may a pain, but it's usually not more than a handful of forms and a hundred bucks.

What he said. I also see AEMT as a waste of time. That, and if you are moving states, that cert has a lot of variability depending on where you go. Some places use AEMT, some still use intermediate 85/99, and many others don't even use them at all. If you want to be a medic, go to medic school. NREMT transfers to most places, TN I believe being one of them.

My understanding is that if you wish to work on ambulance in TN is that you must have your AEMT in order to "challenge" their EMT-IV certification, which is the minimum required for ambulance work in TN.
