does anyone know of a book that explains the "Why's" about what we do? For example in emt school they just tell you to put oxygen on someone or put a c collar on the car accident victim and lie them down but they never tell you why you are doing these tasks. I really think it would be beneficial for me to understand the reasoning behind the tasks we do so I can understand it better. Thanks

This is a bit of a tall order. You're basically asking for a book that contains all the knowledge of medicine.

Go to your local 4-year university and take general chemistry, intro biology, and anatomy+physiology for science majors.

These are good questions. Unfortunately the answer for everything will not be in a single book and EMT school isn't long enough to go into detail, although hopefully your teacher gives as much detail as to why something is done. Furthering your education is the medical field with more teachers/instructors, and many more books is where you will find the answers though.

I would scan the Interweb where you will find as much detail as you can handle. Regarding oxygen, you will find everything from what an oxygen mask looks like to the molecular interactions of dissolved gases. This information may or may not be designed for paramedics but for molecular theorists...and of course you may even come across contradicting theories along the way (hypoxic drive is a classic example).

The best way to start of course is to search the web yourself and when things aren't clear, ask on this site. I find that you will receive better responses when you have started yourself and then ask here for clarification. Those who come here first without appearing to give any effort generally receive the written equivalent of a face palm (just from what I have seen here).

And I have seen textbooks that are grossly and dangerously incorrect. They have pretty pictures but at the end of the day some are as accurate as an entertainment blog.

They don't explain about maintaining c-spine alignment/integrity? Or improving oxygenation to enhance tissue perfusion? My EMT class was many years ago, but we went into the "whys" and "wherefores". Have things changed that much?
