Well I'm looking to get into the local 911 system around here and they hire EMT-B and EMT-P but everytime I post my resume/application for an open EMT position I always get a unconsidered notice on their website and they have 15+ EMT positions available.

I can't start a medic program until next september because the school says you have to have a NJ EMT-B cert and I currently only have a PA cert. I'm in the process of getting my reciprocity cert to get into the medic program.

So my question is, is there any CON ED programs/certs I should get that would help me possibly land a job?

I currently do IFT transport.

Thanks.

1) if you want to work in NJ, a PA EMT cert is just as good as a NJ one.

2) PHTLS, ICS 200, HazMat awareness, CPR-Instructor, CEVO are probably ones that come to mind to get a job.

3) PEPP, GEMS, paramedic assistant, and PEARS are good courses to take if you want to expand your knowledge. PEARS is really good, I definitely recommend it.

4) the biggest thing you need to do is network well. meet people in those classes that are employed in those EMS companies, especially supervisors. having a contact on the inside or a reference from someone who is already employed at the agency you are applying will go much further than any certificate (if the job description doesn't list a required cert).

good luck

Thanks for the help.

So is it even worth it going through the steps to get my NJ cert? Also will a NJ medic school take me with just a PA cert?

College level anatomy and physiology is always a good start.

since every program is different, ask your particular program. as the program what their requirements are. I do know some EMTs in NJ who went to medic school in NY and never had a NY EMT card, but I think it's still mostly agency specific. But if they require a NJ EMT card, than file the reciprocity paperwork. It probably helps to get a job, since it's one less step employers need to worry about.

In addition to A&P, I would also look into taking college level Biology.
