humm....you can get 15 an hour here in jersey with sign on bonuses....plus benefits, 401k blah blah......medics around 45-50k

That is the Dept. of Labor Stats. I find it odd they don't separate EMTs and Paramedics.

true they should seperate those stats. emt-b and emt-p is night and day at least here in jersey. i'm contemplating starting medic school...we will see.

Going into this profession, we will never get rich. I just wish we were better compensated. "Money,I like it,I love it, I JUST WISH I HAD MORE OF IT !!" :P ;) :P

Poor study, it is figured upon an 8 hr/day 40 hr week, in which I know very few EMT's working that schedule. As well, most either get paid over-time or only get paid partial shift- then over time.

Exactly. EMS is one of the professions where one goes into it knowing that he or she will be working overtime in order to make a living.

That said, I was a bit shocked to find that our EMS service only gives 2-4% raises yearly (based on evaluations). With 3% average yearly inflation, the numbers just don't seem to work out. Anyone else know how much of a raise they get yearly?

Four percent is the most anyone can obtain yearly at my service. This is much better than nursing where an average of 1-3% was excellent and if one obtained higher, they were reviewed why they did so.... ?

Most services all pay the same, the salary is based upon the costs of living in that area.. that saying, most medics make lousy salary. I know of flight paramedics making just above poverty level, so don't assume anything.

Yet, until we raise educational requirements, we will not have anything to bargain with. There are very few jobs one can immediately enter the workforce only after a few weeks (<20) of training.

It is a vicious circle..

We get a set hourly then we get shift diffs, and OT if you want it. The shift difs add up, and so does the OT, even if you just p/u one a week. But, as anyone here I love money as well and wish there was more of it in this profession. I think if people truly understood what it takes to be a GOOD key word GOOD medic, they would be shocked at the medial pay scale, but again that is an education issue, for the community

2-4% is actually pretty good. My day gig is in the computer industry, and we're lucky if we get anywhere near 2-4%.

The only people I know getting big raises these days are Congress critters. :|

Politicians UGH! they vote themselves another raise on our dime!:glare:

I voted my self a pay raise and one of the fancy coffee making machines, my boss laughed and to me to make the coffee and get back to work!:P

Says one politician to another: "Don't even try to tell me about tainted money; it just 'taint ever enough!"

another thing to consider is the fact that many services are funded through tax dollars. the unfortunate reality is that as long as you have a county commission board approving budgets, ems in this situation will never be competitive with other health care professions.
