Not trying to promote this product but it works really well for sucking chest wounds/Open pneumos . Ive used it on a stab wound and a 22 cal to the chest both with great results. Works a lot better than making your own and "burping" the dressing.Anbody else use these or something like it ?

Yea we use the asherman.. Although Bolin has a good one as well.

Wow, those are fancy. We still just carry the petroleum gauze.

At my job we carry them. I've never had to use one though. At my volly corp, we still just make them when we have to.

I've used them before... we carried them in Israel, and I recently found one at the bottom of a kit I use here. Really work well.

At least at the services I work for, we really do see SCWs often enough to have a preference...

We carry them, but I have never had to use one....yet. I have heard good things about them though.

Hmmm... $10.75 a piece, vaseline gauze 30 cents

Because who wants to spend $10.45 more for sucking chest wounds, right? :P

Show me what makes this device worth the money? Seal is a seal. You should have at least attempted to burp prior to any administration. As well, the main goal would be to prevent a tension to develop and second to relieve the tension.

Not saying it's not a good device but how is it any better than traditional method?

I guess in some areas, a SCW maybe more common than others also, those that I have seen may have multiple wounds, so even $10.75 maybe not correct.

Part of the problem with trauma, most of those involved with those injuries usually do not carry BC/BS so another write off...

between iraq and afghanistan, ive found the acs to be garbage. between the blood and the sweat, it doesnt stick for anything. a good one we started using is the hyphin by nra. but i can also understand the purpose of just using p-guaze on the civilian side of the house. the time with your pt is a lot shorter so theres no need to spend the extra money.

So in other words, a EMS toy that we will probably not see in 5 years.

I made the argument about the cost and how few GSWs and stabbings we run at the staff meeting when it was introduced. I think our cost is about $7.. EMS God must have ben in the front row and wouldnt you know it I had 2 shootings and two stabbings in a 2 month period whic his unusual for our area with the 2 mentioned earlier requiring the dressing. As for the not sticking I havent had that problem. A few quick wipes of excess fluid and that thing sticks better than a 3m Electrode to your pants. If you want to close off the valve you can fold it and tape it down should the need arise. THe use it very simple for the guys that haent opened one as I had a moments hesitation on how to apply it. Open it up like a 4x4 ,throw away the gauze peice that comes with it and apply as central as you can. Ive used the gauze method and used the aluminum foil instead. Works good too but it saves you the time in making the tape seal if you have bloody hands and or a clueless partner that get tape stuck to his gloves instead of the patient
