Hey guys, i have been reading on here for quite a while and have read quite a bit of very helpful information. I finally decided to post seeing that I am in a bit of a predicament. For you that are familiar with Care in Orange/La County, that is where i am working right now. I have nothing but good things to say about the company. I look forward to going to work everyday even if it is an ift shift and the company treats their employees exceptionally well. With that being said, I recently heard back from AMR Riverside after applying with them about a year ago. I have interviewed with them and it looks like I am going to be getting a job offer. I have talked to a couple of people about the company and i have heard good and bad things about but. I'd rather stay with Care BUT I feel that AMR will have more to offer for my future as a medic. I know many people who have gone to medic school and cant get jobs and slowly their skills vanish. So with that being said I would love some input as to what you guys think would be the better choice. I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks much!

Are you a medic? If so, immediately go to AMR, if not, stay with Care. I loved Care, but don't be that guy, you know the one who's a medic and who has to beg fire to let the start the occasional IV and do the occasional assessment.

Thank you for the reply. No I am not a medic right now. I love the fact that as an emt I can interact with the medics in the ambulance and watch how they do things vs at amr you don't really get to see as much because your a driver. The biggest fear i have is that i go to medic school next year and then i am not able to use my skills immediately and loose them. That is the only reason I was considering going to Amr so I could transfer for to a medic spot at amr once I am a medic. I wish i hadn't got a call from amr then i wouldn't have to make the decision hahaha

Grass isn't always greener. Why risk a job you enjoy? Plus many don't work during medic school (some do) but chances are you'd end up taking time off anyway

That's actually not a bad strategy considering the scarcity of FT medic positions out here, at my division the only recent FT medic hires have been reclasses.

The reason I would risk my job is that AMR riverside is the place to work once your a medic waiting for a job. I love cares shifts, how the company is run, the people.. etc, but my biggest fear is that I graduate medic school and I don't have any where to keep my skills fresh until I get hired. I'm still not 100% but like i said i feel it will benefit my future.

Hey I gotcha man, but your skills as a medic don't disappear overnight. Relax.
And as I said earlier a lot of people don't work while in school, why switch from a job you have senoirity at and a flexable schedule to somewhere where you might end up only working at a short time to accomadate a demanding school year?
I mean do whatever you think is right for you, it would just be bummer to switch somewhere right before school only to have it not work out.
Good Luck either way

i vote stay at care. there aren't many jobs for emt or medic right now, and just because you are a medic doesn't mean AMR will promote you to medic. i know of plenty of medics working for amr riverside as EMTs because AMR isn't promoting right now. find a shift with a good fire crew in the ghetto and you will get to keep your skills plenty current, i recommend Bell or Huntington Park.

@ terrible one. I understand what you are saying, but medic school for me is looking like Rcc in September 2011. I'd like to give myself enough time to get a solid bls foundation.

@socal medic. I just interviewed with AMR the other day and there manager told me during the interview that I would get an offer from them so i'm just waiting to here back. So for the most part I would stop working I'd just go Care to AMR with no break. Haha I actually work our Huntington Park shift quite a bit and it is definitely hood out there!

Like I said do whatever works for you, everyone is different.
Also you said you applied there a year ago? To my understanding applications are only good for 6 months, did you go back again while you were at Care to re-apply there? Just wondering

@ terrible one. I didn't know apps were only suppose to last 6 months, but no I applied just at about a year ago. When I applied I had to turn in a hard copy of of the app and take a written (which was pretty tough). My buddy just applied to AMR Riverside and side the app was online, so I'm not sure if there have changed things??

I've heard both, due to the lack of hiring I think they are keeping apps longer, you do have a better chance of landing a medic spot if you are already an emt there. Also, Riverside division not as good as Hemet or Palm Springs, but both of them are way full of medics.

amr sacramento held applications for almost two years during a recent hiring freeze. they gave them all callbacks though when some spots opened up.

Interesting because I applied about a month ago, and they were not accepting online apps. Also it was straight turn in your app, certs, DMV and take a test. Then it's a "we'll call you thing" I called back a few weeks ago and they said your application is on file for 6 months. Then you must re-apply. Same situation at San Diego too.
That's why I was asking.

Yea i'm pretty sure it is much easier to land a spot as a medic if you are an emt for them. I talked to a couple LA AMR guys the other day and they were saying that a lot of the LA guys are going to Riverside because it is suppose to be better. I know that as a medic in Riverside your scope of practice is a lot bigger than OC or LAC.. I think everyone has different experiences and opinions on the different counties.

From what i hear AMR runs EMS out in Riverside county, so the Medics at AMR are first in

and they work on a 1 to 1 System (1 emt and 1 medic on each rig)

id love to be a medic out in riverside, its soo hard now a days though

It is definitely a very competitive county to be a medic in but if you can get in man the experience you come out with...

AMR is rarely first in, their ETA's are horrible. yes they have "medical authority" however the first medic O/S does not have to transfer care.

Really? We are 1st in at least 50% of the time, and rarely will a CDF medic refuse to xfer pt care.

AMR is not a bad company. They offer tons of CE opportunities, good benefits, tons of shifts that people give away atleast in San Diego they do, so plenty of opportunities for OT(which is a plus if you like that bank roll). Full benefits, PTO,401k, over all enjoyable people to work with. This is in San Diego of course and what i have experianced since i have been working.
