My engine filled in at an Alexandria City firehouse last night. Their EMS is fire based, but EMS and fire are completely seperate. The medic said they work XOOXOOOO. That's a sweet schedule, and allows for time to do basically another full time job, or full time school. I don't know of their pension or benefits, but should be comparable to other area depts. For comparison, Fairfax firemedics earn in the mid 60's after the academy, other depts in the area pay in the low 50's to 60K after the academy. Something to think about if you're looking for an EMS only gig with FD quality benefits and pay. I don't know when they're expecting to hire. You can call recruitment for that info.
