Is it worth it if my goal is to become a paramedic to do AEMT first? The course here for AEMT is August 2014-May 2015.

Usually you can go directly from EMT to Paramedic without doing AEMT first. Unless your program uses goes through AEMT through Paramedic, I'd skip it and just go directly to Paramedic. It's not that putting in time as an AEMT isn't valuable, it's just that Paramedic programs that can take the EMT all the way through is going to be a better use of time overall than stopping along the way to gain AEMT. If the Paramedic program has a certain point where students can optionally take AEMT, that's fine... but it shouldn't be required.

Worth it? I suppose it is if you want to spend money to learn skills that you will spend money on to learn again in Paramedic training.

So, no. If your goal is to become a paramedic, go to paramedic school. You'll reach your goal quicker and at less financial cost.

If you want to be a medic just save some time and money and go directly into medic school.

There really isn't a point in being an almost medic if you want to become a medic

I have to echo what everyone else has said. I'm starting my EMT-B in a few days, and I've asked others the same question about going on to be a medic. Everyone concurs that I should bypass the AEMT and go from EMT-B to paramedic. For someone like me -- who's older -- getting on with the training for EMT-B and then paramedic is not only a matter of money but also time.

Cheers,
M.

As mentioned, if your goal is Paramedic, then try to find the most direct route. Some programs require AEMT, some offer the ability to get AEMT halfway, and some are straight to Paramedic.

I do suggest, however, that you get some experience in the field with real calls and real Pt contact in order to confirm that emergency medicine is your thing.

I spent two years an an Intermediate. I really wish I had done my original plan of going straight out of basic and into medic. The money I made would have been nice, and I'd be closer to my goal.

I'm going to agree with most everyone else here ... with one important difference. You know you the best. If you feel the jump to Paramedic will be too difficult or too much for you to grab ... then go to AEMT. But personally, I tend to recommend going from EMT to Paramedic. As a side note ... I feel it's important to have a good EMT foundation to build on. Meaning if you haven't been an active EMT for a while, maybe wait a little to build the foundations.
