Not exactly sure where to post this question so move it if need be.

I am currently enrolled in an AEMT course near my house. We are a couple classes in and soon to start clinicals. This past week we discussed drug administration after going through the usual drugs that I thought an AEMT is LIMITED to use our instructor mentioned that if we are under the supervision of a high licensed medical professional we can push drugs that are not on the list. (below is the list) My question is is it true that you can push drugs outside of your scope if under a high licensed persons supervision?

A. Albuterol
H. Naloxone

B. Aspirin
I. Nitroglycerin

C. Dextrose (50%)

D. Epinephrine (Intramuscular or Subcutaneous)

E.Glucagon
F. Glucose
J. Oxygen

G. Intravenous Fluids
K. Nitrous Oxide

1. Dextrose 5% in water

2. Normal Saline

3. Lactated Ringer's

It is done at the EMT-IV level in Colorado if the patient is in extremis and the medical director has previously approved such a practice.

I usually spend most codes under the direction of the medic while he manages the airway,

It will depend on your state and or company.

Forgot to mention this is in Michigan. Im assuming its going to be left up to protocols but Im not to sure. I just dont want to endanger my EMT license...

ive been told to never under any circumstance push a drug that is outside your scope. In class i brought up that if your medic draws up the versed and tells you to push it do you push it, and I was told (like stated above) that you should never ever push a drug outside your scope of practice regardless of who is telling you to push it. (sorry if that doesn't make much sense, feeling a little foggy tonight)

There are places that do allow a lower license to function under the medic. Maine is definitely not one of them though.

wish there was someone I knew I could ask... I know hes me instructor and all but it just makes me a little nervous pushing a drug I have not learned to much about....

Why don't you wait and as the director of whatever service you work for, and see what their Medical Director or state protocols you operate under dictate? I'm sure your scope will be well defined for clinicals...
